About this program

SWTCH ships a Level 2 charger at no upfront hardware cost against a refundable $300 deposit; title transfers to you on delivery, so the charger is yours to keep and can be moved to another address. You then earn cash back for every kWh charged through the SWTCH app, starting at 3¢/kWh and rising to 11¢/kWh after 1,500 kWh (SWTCH estimates 3–5 months for an average driver). Earnings accrue while you're still working toward the refund, which is released at that same 1,500 kWh mark. A separate outright-purchase option pays a flat 11¢/kWh with no deposit. No monthly or annual membership fees.

Eligibility

Canadian residents with the legal right to install a charger at their residential property, who keep an active SWTCH account and the charger connected to the internet. No monthly or annual fee to join. Charging activity, deposit progress and earnings are tracked separately for each charger, but the no-upfront-cost offer is limited to one charger per residential property; further chargers can be added through the outright-purchase option.

Hardware & vehicle requirements

A SWTCH Level 2 charger is supplied at no upfront hardware cost against a refundable $300 deposit, plus a $30 shipping fee, in a 9.6 kW plug-in (NEMA 14-50) or 11.5 kW hardwired model; title transfers to you on delivery. Installation is the participant's responsibility and cost. SWTCH's FAQ says the plug-in model may be mounted and connected to an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet, while its Terms of Service state that installation must be performed by a licensed electrician. Hardwired installation requires an electrician. The charger must stay connected to Wi-Fi for program participation and data synchronization. SWTCH's terms state that it continues functioning as a standard charger while offline and stores charging-session data locally until the connection is restored. The dedicated SWTCH Home Charging Program app is required to participate.

Reward structure details

Deposit path: 3¢/kWh for the first 1,500 kWh, then 11¢/kWh; earnings start immediately, alongside progress toward the refund. Outright-purchase path: flat 11¢/kWh from the start. Paid by direct deposit through the app once the balance reaches $100, issued within 15 business days. The $300 deposit is refunded after 1,500 kWh with no time limit, and requires current app and firmware versions. Rates are described as variable and not guaranteed. CAA Atlantic members can earn an additional 1¢/kWh on top of their applicable SWTCH Home Charging base rate after adding their CAA Atlantic membership number in the Promotions section of the SWTCH Home Charging app. This bonus is limited to CAA Atlantic members and is not a general CAA Canada benefit. At the current rates, an eligible CAA Atlantic member earns 4¢/kWh in the 3¢ tier and 12¢/kWh in the 11¢ tier. If you cancel or return the charger, you must send it back at your own expense, SWTCH deducts a $75 restocking fee from the deposit, and further deductions may apply for damage beyond normal wear.
